International students prefer to study in Canada over the US
The strict immigration policies and problems people face in obtaining a foreign student work visa, as well as the difficulties recent university graduates from other countries are having in the US in obtaining a work permit, could be causing many of them to change their destination and choose to come to Canada or other countries like England or Australia. This is according to a study that shows how international student applications and enrolment at US institutions fell in 2018 for the second consecutive year. Experts believe that Canada is very attractive to international students, and the speed with which they can obtain work permits or work visas under the special Express Entry programs created by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada in just a few weeks not only gives the applicant who hands in the required documents the necessary permit, but also residence. While this is going on in Canada, obstacles are increasing in the US.

Around 1,000 people a year had their immigration applications rejected for health reasons
An internal report from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) pointed out that 900 to 1,000 people a year have their immigration applications rejected due to health problems. These people’s applications, if accepted, would place a heavy burden on Canada’s healthcare system. British Columbia medical experts said that IRCC’s screening for latent tuberculosis is not sufficient and suggested that screening for syphilis be included in medical examinations for immigration. IRCC medical and visa officers pointed out that immigration applicants whose applications are rejected for health reasons will usually file appeals, which they usually win.

New Global Talent Stream will make the immigration process faster
Canada is set to make its Global Talent Stream (GTS) program a permanent scheme. Applications will be processed within two weeks resulting in the very fast work permit issuance. This program has two categories, A and B. Category A requires annual salaries of at least $80,000 CAD for the first 2 applications while for the subsequent applications, it is CAD $150,000. Owners of Canadian companies will be able to call skilled workers from any corner of the globe in accordance with their requirements. Most importantly, work permit holders under the GTS will get preference in obtaining permanent residence.

Minister of Immigration, Ahmed Hussen thanked “all Canadians for opening both their hearts and homes to welcome more than 327,000 refugees over the last four decades from coast to coast to coast.” Hussen said, “We can all take pride in the example Canadians set for the world. It is truly emblematic of the character of Canadians and the fabric of our great country”.
Spousal sponsorship refusal rate has increased to 26-28%
Processing time for spousal sponsorship has gone down to 12 months for all candidates. But the refusal rate has increased to 26-28%. It doesn’t matter whether it is a first marriage or second marriage, the applicant needs to submit all the documents and provide correct information, even with additional information depending on the individual’s circumstances. The visa officer assesses the genuineness of the marriage to ensure that the marriage was not entered into for the purpose of immigration. In case of refusal, an applicant can go to the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD). There was a long wait time at IAD. But, recently, the division has been processing spousal sponsorship appeals within 12 months.
