British Columbia invited 506 candidates in the new draws
On March 16, 2021, British Columbia held two invitation rounds in the Skills Immigration (SI) and Express Entry British Columbia (EEBC) categories of the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP). In the general draw, the province invited 428 candidates to apply for a nomination of British Columbia. The lowest scores in this round slightly changed:

Skills Immigration – Entry Level and Semi-Skilled 81 (-2 points)

The second draw of the day was aimed solely at candidates in NOC 0621 – Retail and Wholesale Trade Managers and NOC 0631 Restaurant and Food Service Managers. According to the government, both occupations have a high number of registrants within the BC PNP Skills Immigration Registration System. The lowest score of those candidates was 114 points. In total, British Columbia invited 2,440 under the BCPNP to apply for a nomination in 2021.

Alberta held a new AINP draw on March 2
On March 16, 2021, Alberta released a new update about the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP). On March 2, 2021, the government held a new invitation round in the Alberta Express Entry Stream and issued 200 Notifications of Interest (NOI). The lowest score in this round was 301 points, 51 points fewer compared to March 2 draw. In 2021, AINP already invited 709 Express Entry candidates to apply for a provincial nomination in the Alberta Express Entry. As of now, AINP received 2,300 applications in the Alberta Opportunity Stream and 100 Expressions of Interest (EOI) in the Alberta Express Entry Stream. These applications are waiting for the eligibility assessment. The 2021 quota for Alberta will be announced later this year.

International students from India and China received more than half of the Study Permits in 2020
Canadian campuses become more Asian. According to the final data for 2020 by IRCC, India and China supplied more than half of all international students to Canada – 54.2%. Every third international student arrived from India. Every fifth student came from China. South Korea became the third biggest country of origin for international students. In the top-15 nations sending most of the students, nine are Asian countries. The only European country in the top-15 is France and most of them come to Quebec. The list of top-15 countries includes:

South Korea – 10,980 (4.3%)
Vietnam – 9,405 (3.7%)
France – 8,005 (3.1%)

In total, Canada issued 257,360 study permits in 2020. In January 2021, IRCC already issued 27,690 study permits.

OINP paused the intake for the In-Demand Skills and Ph.D. Graduate streams
Following the upcoming introduction of the new Expression of Interest (EOI) system to manage five streams of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP), on March 16, 2021, the province paused the intake for the Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills and Ph.D. Graduate streams. Throughout the year, those two OINP streams always remained open but now the government temporarily closed those streams to adjust them to the points-based EOI system. In 2019, OINP nominated 19 candidates in the In-Demand Skills and 234 in the Ph.D. Graduate stream. The data for 2020 is yet to be published.
